When Joseph Smith decided to once again prove his title as a "seer," he chose to "translate" genuine Egyptian papyri that came into their possession when a traveling museum passed through his town. Joseph Smith immediately declared he could indeed translate these ancient papyri, announcing he had discovered another ancient biblical text that even preceded Genesis. To Mormons this is known as the Book of Abraham, and it is contained in The Pearl of Great Price.
We’ll never know if Joseph Smith really translated the Book of Mormon from “gold plates” as God took back the plates so we have no reference. Unfortunately for Joseph Smith and the LDS Church, we do have the papyri he used to translate the Book of Abraham. Now thanks to the Rosetta Stone, we can do something people could not do in mid-19th century America – READ HEIROGLYPHICS!
Conclusion: According to universities and Egyptologists the real translation does not bear any resemblance to Joseph Smith’s translation. It is a common funerary document included in all sarcophagi. |
